In the 1870s, a large number
of Swedish immigrants moved to Texas, many of whom settled
in central Austin and established a small community that
has since been known as Swede Hill. These new immigrants
displayed a level of craftmanship and state of preservation
that immediately gave Swede Hill its own unique feel.
Soon after, churches and even a small college were added
to the community. In 1986 Swede Hill was designated a
National Register historic district. Though the perimiter
of the community has changed over time due to Austin's
growth and development, much of Swede Hill Remains intact
including a few historic structures.
